Chinese Astrology

What Is Chinese Astrology?

According to legend, when Buddha found enlightenment under a fig tree he invited all the animals in creation to share in his joy. Only 12 however accepted and it is these 12 who are honoured by being included in the Chinese zodiac. Each animal was allotted its own year to govern. Chinese astrology is very old. Although Buddha lived 2,500 years ago (563-483 BCE), the truth is that no one actually knows how old Chinese astrology is and it may well predate him. There are some who date its origin as far back as the reign of the legendary Yellow Emperor of China, who lived around 2630 BCE. What we do know is that the system, still in wide use today in China and other eastern countries, has remained unchanged for several thousand years. Until even quite recently, it would have been unthinkable for anyone in China to have married, moved house, changed jobs, conceived a child or even celebrated a happy event without first getting advice from an astrologer. Astrological studies reached their peak in China during the Han dynasty (200 BCE to 200 CE), but at one time, the Emperor banned "ordinary" people from using astrology on the grounds that it was dangerous. He considered the information it imparted so accurate that it could be used to plot against him and his court. He banned its use - except for himself, naturally.

The Philosophy Of Chinese Astrology

Chinese astrology was influenced by Taoism, one of the ancient religions of China. The Tao (the Way) says that everything in the universe has a quality or aspect which is either male or female, advancing or retiring, light or dark. Everything is in a state of constant change between the two opposites, which are not in conflict with each other but are complementary. The opposites are called yang (male) and yin (female) and they are represented by a symbol in which each half contains a tiny seed of the opposite aspect, indicating their interdependence. Both qualities are essential and balance each other: together they make us complete.

The Five Elements

The basic qualities of yin and yang are further defined by one of the five elements - water, wood, fire, metal or earth. Each animal and each year is either yin or yang and is governed by an element. The animals are divided into four groups: (1) water - rat, ox and pig; (2) wood - tiger, hare and dragon; (3) fire -snake, horse and goat; (4) metal - monkey, rooster and dog. Earth rules no animals but it lends its qualities to some of the years.

Water is associated with the north: communication, sensitivity and intuition.
Wood is associated with the east: nurturing, creativity and growth.
Fire is associated with the south: passion, intelligence and movement.
Metal is associated with the west: useful and dependable.
Earth is the centre: balance, reliability, foundations.

Note
: Tarot elements are based on the same assumptions as Chinese astrology elements.

The 60-Year Cycle

As there are 12 animals and five elements in the Chinese astrological system, they give rise to 60 different animal types, succeeding one another in rotation through a 60-year cycle, with half of the years being yin and half being yang. This 60-year cycle is important as it makes each year special and unique - you are not just a particular animal (one of 12) but a particular type of animal. If you happen to be a yin water tiger for example, your character and life will be very different from that of a yang wood tiger. If you then add in the 12 months of the year which also affect Chinese horoscopes, and the 12 divisions for the times of day you can see that this gives a total of 8640 possible combinations of horoscopes (five elements x 12 animals x 12 months x 12 times of day).
